What are common problems with log splitters? ›

If you mainly split soft, straight-grain, or dry, seasoned wood, 22-ton to 28 tons of power will suffice. If slow-burning hardwood will be in your wood stove this winter, then how many tons of force your log splitter can produce is much more of a factor.

Check underneath the blade/pusher and down the sides of the carriage for any splinters of wood that may obstruct the carriage. Also, check that the plastic spacers underneath the blade and the underside of the splitter have not been dislodged. Ensure that the log rails are not obstructing the moving carriage.

As instructed in our manuals; you should replace the hydraulic oil in your log splitter after every 150 hours of use. First, ensure that all moving parts are entirely stopped and the log splitter is unplugged. You then unscrew the oil drain bolt with the dipstick to remove it.

First extend the piston rod to its maximum length and remove the oil filling plug. Then twist the release screw in a counterclockwise motion as fast as you can. The piston rod will draw back into the cylinder which will cause the air to be released.
